2020 has been a challenging year!
This is also true for Mercy Ships. When we left Senegal in mid-March 2020, we had to suspend our surgical programme. Stationed in a shipyard in the Canary Islands since then, the Africa Mercy has been developing its e-learning programs to continue building local capacity even from a distance. All the while preparing to return to Africa, better prepared, ready to face the many constraints of the pandemic!
So why continue recruiting volunteers?
Even if our hospital on board is not operational, it takes a whole crew to run a ship! From the engine room technician to the galley staff, there are still over a hundred of us on board keeping this ship afloat!
And on the other hand, we have to look ahead to the future with two ships. That means more than 1,000 volunteers to house at a time, with rotations implying that, for each mission, we will need more than 3,000 volunteers from all over the world!
Overwhelming, right? It is! 😊
