Update on the Situation in Madagascar,
One Week After Cyclone Gezani
On February 10, Tropical Cyclone Gezani struck Madagascar, severely impacting the port city of Tamatave (Toamasina).Â
The cyclone caused widespread destruction, population displacement, fatalities, and significant material losses. Disruption to water, electricity, and food supplies have created extremely challenging conditions for affected communities.Â
As a long-standing partner in Madagascar, we recognize the profound impact this has had on families and communities across the region. Our thoughts and prayers are with those affected, including our local news and security teams on-site. The health and safety of our teams on the ground and our patients remain our hightes priority.Â
As planned, the Africa Mercy® departed Madagascar at the end of its previous mission in December 2025. It is currently in Durban, South Africa, for its scheduled annual maintenance. While the ship is not in country at this time, our commitment to the people of Madascar remains steadfast.
We are working closely with our partners and local authorities to assess the impact of the cyclone and determine the next steps for repairs and restoration.
